When Dottie Burman passed away, her estate bequeathed $5,000 dollars to MAC to set up a songwriting competition in her name that would award a cash prize to songwriters aged 40 and over who have not yet received recognition for their writing talents. The MAC Board passed a motion to create a matching award in John Wallowitch’s name to honor songwriters under 40. The finalists are chosen by a panel of judges, and the final decision is made by a celebrity judge from the world of cabaret. Past judges include John McDaniel (2021), Joe Iconis (2021), Barb Jungr (2014), Lauren Molina (2013), Ann Hampton Callaway (2012), Karen Mason (2011), and Sharon McNight (2017). Past winners have included Sammy Buck & San Acquisto, Sam Carner & Derek Gregor, Patrick Dwyer, Amy Englehart, Drew Fornarola, Harriet Goldberg, Adam Gwon, Joe Iconis, Kenneth Jones & Gerald Stockstill, Shaina Taub, Sam Willmott, Amanda Yesnowitz & Deborah Abramson, Jeff Thomson & Jordan Mann, and Adam Watcher. Deborah Stone - Singer/Actor is emerging as a Cabaret ⭐️. With a velvety voice reminiscent of Rosemary Clooney, (and hints of Nancy Lamott) Stone’s musical phrasing is impressive and rare. She exemplifies great delicacy, legato, and lyric connection. She is, in fact, a singer‘s singer. Her show, “Chiarascuro” played with the light and dark qualities of life that we’ve all experienced in the last few years. How fitting that her voice, with its own “light and dark qualities” was able to illustrate this message for us aurally, as well as she did visually. She was ablely assisted by music director John M. Cook , and Tom Hubbard on the Bass. Lina Koutrakos directed will with both subtlety and aplomb.Additional performances will be announced. Ann Talman performed a beautiful show in tribute to her dear friend and cast-mate in The Little Foxes, Elizabeth Taylor, at Feinstein’s/54 Below last night. She sang beautifully and movingly. Her stories and memories of Elizabeth were EVERYTHING. She made the audience both laugh and cry. It was regal and sublime just like Elizabeth and Ann herself.
