SARAH RICE—ORIGINAL JOHANNA IN SWEENEY TODD—
REPRISES HER BISTRO & MAC AWARD WINNING SHOW
SCREEN GEMS: SONGS OF OLD HOLLYWOOD
IN NEW YORK CABARET’S GREATEST HITS SERIES
AT HIDDEN CABARET, APRIL 6 AT 7 PM
In a past life, Sarah Rice must have been a Singing Siren Star during the early days of Hollywood. That’s as good a way as any to explain how the soaring soprano and original “Johanna” in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd on Broadway captured a 2010 Bistro Award (“Best Theme Show”) and a 2011 MAC Award (“Best Female Vocalist) for her critically acclaimed cabaret show, SCREEN GEMS: SONGS OF OLD HOLLYWOOD.
Almost 10 years later, Rice will reprise her hit show in the monthly series NEW YORK CABARET’S GREATEST HITS—produced by Stephen Hanks (and Associate Producer Fr. Jeffrey Hamblin)—at Hidden Cabaret (at The Secret Room) on Monday, April 6 at 7 pm. Directed by JoAnn Yeoman, with Music Director Seth Weinstein on piano andMark Watson as special guest singer, Screen Gems: Songs of Old Hollywood showcases Rice broad range as a singer and cabaret performer. Representing films from the early 20th century through the 1960s, Rice’s setlist includes movie songs that were sung by Jeannette MacDonald, Lotte Lenya, Kathryn Grayson, Pola Negri, Helen Morgan, Jane Powell, Angela Lansbury, Audrey Hepburn, and more. Other songs will pay tribute to Rudolph Valentino and Walt Disney classics.
Here’s what Cabaret critics said about Sarah Rice’s Screen Gems–Songs of Old Hollywood:
“If the gods of Cabaret were to take the coloratura vocal stylings and elegance of Barbara Cook, merge them with the earthiness and humor of Baby Jane Dexter, and wrap the whole package in a bundle of sparkle, the end result would without question be Sarah Rice . . . Her unique rendition of “Moon River,” turned the audience from fans into a worshiping cult.” –NightLifeExchange.com
“In her entertaining new cabaret show. it is evident that Sarah Rice’s voice remains a ravishing instrument . . . Her acting is commanding and her singing is exemplary . . . She offered quite simply the most riveting rendition of “Pirate Jenny” I’ve ever heard.”—Bistro Awards.com
