Having just completed a successful reprise of her show, “Only From The Heart Can You Touch The Sky (which has been nominated for three Broadway World Cabaret Awards), MAC Award and Broadway World Cabaret Award nominee Renee Katz will return to Don’t Tell Mama this Friday night, December 7th reprising another show she performed last year, entitled “Renee Katz: Winter Awakenings”. It showcases the song cycle, “December Songs,” by Broadway composer Maury Yeston, a song cycle inspired by Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise.”
In explaining the premise of her show, Renee says “it’s a journey of 10 continuous songs, one flowing into the next, that talks about reflections and memories that forever stay within us. It gets hopeful at the end — that as we move on, we can move forward. The song cycle is framed by poetry and other selected songs, including ‘I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm’ by Irving Berlin and ‘Ribbons Down My Back’ from ‘Hello, Dolly!’ I always try and do different things. I don’t sing things that I don’t feel.”
Another MAC Award and Broadway World Cabaret Award nominee John M. Cook, who is the musical director for “Winter Awakenings,” said he was drawn to the show’s unique and literary feel. “It was different in format than most cabaret shows would be and the ‘December Songs’ cycle has really only been attempted by a handful of singers, at this point.”
Last year, Renee returned to the New York cabaret stage after being away for many years. She said that despite her long absence, she never lost her love of singing. She stated that “there are different times in your life for different things, but that doesn’t mean you lose your passion for the things you love. Music is my first love — and that never goes away.”
Renee is back now singing better than ever and has garnered not only praise by critics but many new admirers who now look forward to her appearances with great anticipation . As a result, she has now fully embraced this new chapter in her life with excitement, passion, and most of all, joy. Renee has summed up her feelings by saying “cabaret is a beautiful art form where you’re in an intimate setting and you can actually communicate emotions to the audience — and I love that. It’s a beautiful community; everybody supports one another. “
