Over the next few weeks, Cabaret Hotspot! will be Spotlighting the different Open Mics. Up first is the multi-award winning The Salon. This open mic started at the Algonquin Salon, moved to Etc., Etc. where it had a long run and now has set up shop at Don’t Tell Mama.
This show is co-produced by Tanya Moberly and Mark Janas. Sign up is at 7:00 with the show starting at 7:30. “Mama-ettes” sign you up for the two sets. You fill out a card with your song choice and any information you’d like announced by the Host after you sing so it’s also a good opportunity to network and try to sell some seats to your show.
All levels of singers are represented and welcomed. “Trying on” a new tune is also encouraged. All kinds of music, spoken word, original tunes, and a special “Classical Corner” by Mark Janas is presented. This is a safe place to sing and to hone your skills.
It is a weekly open mic with a theme but singing on-theme is not enforced. Each singer gets 1 tune BUT…if you impress, there is always an opportunity to be asked to do a Guest Spot which is a 3-song set OR to co-host the show where you do 5 tunes throughout the evening. This is another good opportunity to advertise yourself if you have a show coming up. There is a different co-host and guest singer each week.
This audience is mostly other singers but a real Salon family has developed with many of these singers supporting each other’s work.
There is a $10 cover charge ($5 for students with ID) and a $20 food/drink minimum. Cash or credit is accepted and for The Salon only, Don’t Tell Mama’s serves dinner in the cabaret room.
