Carmen by Request at the Waterfront Playhouse, Mallory Square Key West, FL

The 2018-19 season for the Waterfront Playhouse got off to a rousing start with a concert by popular singer Carmen Rodriguez and some of her friends. The Waterfront Playhouse, known for their straight plays and musicals, opened the season with a cabaret style show on their main stage. Carmen, a beautiful and versatile singer was joined on stage by some of Key West’s most popular singers: Bobby Nesbitt, Michael Thomas and Dave Bootle. The musical director for the evening was Robert Strickland. He was joined by Skipper Kripitz on drums and Joe Dallas on bass.

Carmen Rodriguez is a Key West native who has been singing publicly since she was a teenager. During the show her special guests: Michael Thomas, Dave Boodles and Bobby Nesbitt accompanied her for a song and then sang their solo numbers. Dave Boodle got up from the piano and was accompanied by Robert Strickland for his solo. I got the impression that they are all friends and have had years of experience working together. This made for an easy-going evening full of music, warmth and camaraderie. This show offered just a glimpse of some of the splendid talent living in this small Florida town. All of the performers are accustomed to responding to requests and the show was built around songs that had been widely requested of each of the singers through the years. This loose theme allowed for a wide variety of songs: standards, pop songs, country and novelty songs. The versatile guest singers brought variety to the proceedings, but the evening was held together by the strong vocals from Ms. Rodriguez who is at home with rock, country or American song book standards. The capacity audience was delighted with the show. We left the theatre with a spring in our steps put there by this satisfying show.

The opening night performance was followed by a sumptuous buffet served in the sculpture garden in front of the theater. The star and all of her guests can be seen around Key West at various locations:
